Beyond the wide receiver and running back positions, it’s arguable that the Dallas Cowboys’ most significant need in the NFL Draft is at cornerback. Following Jourdan Lewis’s departure, Trevon Diggs’s late-season injury, and DaRon Bland’s uncertain prospects, the Cowboys’ future in this area is unclear.
Luckily, a current Cowboys player suggests that the top cornerback prospect in this year’s draft is eager to address these issues in Arlington. During a recent appearance on TheKnoItAllz Podcast, Cowboys left tackle and 2024 first-round pick Tyler Guyton shared that Texas Longhorns defensive back Jahdae Barron “really, really” wants to join America’s Team.
“Losing Jourdan Lewis is a big hit for us,” Guyton mentioned. “I have a friend at the Longhorns, Jahdae Barron, who is very keen on becoming a Cowboy. He’d be an excellent fit for our team.”
As someone hailing from Austin, TX, it’s understandable that Barron would want to play close to his roots. Supporting Guyton’s point, Barron, at 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, could be an ideal replacement for Lewis, offering a similar style and versatility as the former Cowboy.
Capable of playing nickel corner, outside corner, or any role in the secondary, Barron has shown an impressive knack for creating turnovers and making game-changing plays. Last season, he led the SEC with five interceptions, complemented by 11 pass breakups, 67 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and one sack. This outstanding performance earned him the Thorpe Award, recognizing the nation’s top defensive back, along with first-team All-American and first-team All-SEC honors.
During his tenure at Texas, Barron participated in 56 games, starting 38, and accumulated eight interceptions, 227 total tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, 32 pass deflections, and three fumble recoveries. With such impressive stats and adaptability, it’s hard to imagine that Dallas isn’t seriously considering making this former Longhorn a part of the Cowboys’ roster.
