Last offseason, the Baltimore Ravens caused a stir by signing Derrick Henry. While some questioned the fit, it turned out to be a significant advantage for one of the AFC’s prominent teams. Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys face criticism for not pursuing Henry, despite “King Henry” residing in Dallas during the offseason and not receiving a call from them.
With two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson at quarterback and Henry as a powerful force behind him, Baltimore’s offense reached new heights. However, their defense lost some strength, especially in the secondary. The Ravens excelled at stopping the run, conceding the fewest rushing yards per game (80.1) in the league, but their secondary struggled, allowing 244.1 passing yards per game, ranking second-worst among the 32 teams.
On Tuesday, Baltimore took steps to address this issue by signing free agent cornerback Chidobe Awuzie to a one-year contract, as reported by NFL media’s Ian Rapoport. Awuzie will join on a minimum deal, and once again, the Cowboys get a mention. After losing Brandon Stephens to the New York Jets in free agency, the Ravens needed another cornerback.
Rather than waiting for the NFL Draft, they opted for Awuzie, a reliable player in coverage when healthy. The Tennessee Titans released Awuzie on March 15, following a three-year, $36 million contract signed last offseason.
This deal came after three impressive seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and four with the Cowboys, where he was a full-time starter as a second-round pick, sparking some reunion speculation among Cowboys fans. Awuzie’s contributions to the Bengals’ secondary enhanced his reputation before an injury in 2024 limited him to eight games, during which he recorded 26 tackles and one interception.
