Josh Allenās Turnover Turnaround: The Key to Buffaloās Success
Since entering the NFL, Josh Allen has been known for his fearless, gunslinger mentality, often threading the needle with daring throws and taking risks with his legs. This style has made him one of the leagueās most electrifying quarterbacks but has also resulted in a history of turnovers.
In five of his seven NFL seasons, Allen has recorded double-digit interceptions and at least seven fumbles. Twice, his total turnovers exceeded 13 in a single season. However, 2024 has marked a significant shift in Allenās game, with the Buffalo Bills quarterback dramatically reducing his mistakes.
The Stats Speak Volumes
This season, Allen has thrown just six interceptions and fumbled five timesāa drastic improvement compared to his career averages. For context, Allen had never finished a season with fewer than 17 total turnovers. His newfound ball security has played a pivotal role in the Billsā impressive 13-3 record.
Allen credits this improvement to the offensive system implemented by offensive coordinator Joe Brady and the guidance of quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry.
āI think conceptually just with Joe [Brady] understanding what he’s calling, why he’s calling it,” Allen explained. āSome years you get a lot of tipped interceptions, and some years you get a lot of dropped ones. I’ve probably thrown a couple that have been dropped and, again, just trying to make good decisions. But I think that starts with the concept that Joe’s putting in and making sure that RC [quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry] is going through everything and learning those the right way.ā
Balanced Production
While Allenās yardage numbers are slightly down this year, his overall production remains elite. He has matched his previous touchdown totals, with a mix of passing and a career-high 12 rushing scores. Additionally, he has only been sacked 14 timesāhis lowest total in any season.
This balance between productivity and ball security has made Allen even more dangerous, forcing defenses to respect his decision-making while still fearing his playmaking ability.
Impact on Buffaloās Super Bowl Quest
Allenās reduced turnover rate might not just earn him his first MVP awardāit could be the weapon Buffalo needs to finally capture a Super Bowl title.
By protecting the football and minimizing costly mistakes, Allen gives the Bills a better chance to capitalize on every possession, particularly in the high-pressure environment of the playoffs.
Looking Ahead
As the Bills gear up for the postseason, Allenās refined approach will be crucial. His ability to stay aggressive while limiting risks has not only elevated his individual play but also transformed Buffalo into a more complete and resilient team.
The question now is whether Allen can maintain this level of discipline and execution as the stakes rise. If he can, the Bills might be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy come February.
