Braves Franchise Milestones

• 1963: Milwaukee Braves pitcher Bob Shaw makes unwanted history by committing five balks in a single game—still a major league record. In a wild sequence, Shaw walked Billy Williams in the third inning, then balked three times in a row to bring Williams home. Shaw was tossed from the game in the fifth, and the Braves fell 5-3 to the Cubs.
• 2011: Tim Hudson flirts with perfection, throwing a one-hit shutout in an 8-0 Braves win over the Brewers in Game 2 of a doubleheader. Atlanta also cruised to an 8-3 win in the opener. Nate McLouth had a day to remember, reaching base all eight times he came to the plate—going 5-for-5 with three walks and a home run.

• 1919: Baseball Sundays are born in New York as Governor Al Smith signs legislation legalizing games on Sundays for the first time.
• 1931: A position shuffle goes awry for the Yankees—Babe Ruth, hampered by a leg injury, moves to first base while Lou Gehrig shifts to right field. Gehrig commits a costly error in a 7-3 loss to the Senators.
• 1939: Rookie Ted Williams makes a statement in Detroit, becoming the first player to launch a home run completely over the right-field stands at Briggs Stadium—his first career at-bat there.
• 1966: Willie Mays hits his 512th career home run, breaking Mel Ott’s National League record for most homers.
• 1969: The Houston Astros set a National League record by turning an incredible seven double plays in a game against the Giants.
• 1984: In one of baseball’s strangest moments, Dave Kingman is awarded a double after the ball he hits disappears—literally—into a drainage hole in the Metrodome roof.
• 2002: Barry Bonds joins the 400-home-run club, blasting his milestone shot to lead the Giants to a 3-0 victory over the Reds.
