The Pittsburgh Steelers finally went through with trading away George Pickens after months of speculation of them making the move. With Pickens now on the Dallas Cowboys it allows the Steelers to not have to worry about his upcoming contract next offseason and they got value back in return instead of letting him walk for nothing.
While the move helps benefit their future, it dampens their wide receiver room for this upcoming season. They did trade for DK Metcalf to help out and be their new WR1, but to rely on just Roman Wilson off an injury as the WR2 is. It ideal for a Pittsburgh team that doesn’t even have a quarterback in place yet. With that, the Steelers could look to add another wide receiver in free agency to round out the room, and that wide receiver could just end up being Amari Cooper.
Amari Cooper Signs With the Pittsburgh Steelers
Amari Cooper currently remains a free agent as he is coming off a down season, and will be 31 by the start of the 2025 NFL season. Taking both factors into account, it’s led to teams not being overly eager to sign Cooper. Still, even though Cooper might not be able to produce like he once used to, Cooper can still be a viable secondary receiver to take pressure off Metcalf, and add more depth to the receiver room.
Before Amari Cooper was traded to the Buffalo Bills, he had spent three seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Cooper knows the division already which would be an additional plus, and for the Steelers, being able to get a player that once used to be on a rival team would be beneficial.
Cooper sitting out for free agency as long as he has will have brought his value down so Pittsburgh wouldn’t have to give up much financially to sign him. Cooper paired with Metcalf would create a size mismatch on the outside, which is exactly what the Steelers need, making Amari Cooper ideal to sign for multiple reasons.
