On Saturday afternoon, the Buffalo Bills announced roster moves that included elevating their league-alotted two players from the practice squad. The move comes a day before the Bills host the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL’s final divisional round game.
The Bills chose to elevate wide receiver Jalen Virgil and offensinve lineman Will Clapp for their second playoff game. The fact that they did not chose to elevate Frank Gore, Jr., who is the only running back on Buffalo’s practice squad, is a good indication that running back Ray Davis may have cleared concussion protocol.
Davis took a hit to the head in last week’s wild card win over the Denver Broncos and was almost immediately put in the league’s protocol. By Wednesday, the rookie – who has been a part of Buffalo’s 1-2-3 punch out of the backfield with three rushing and three receiving touchdowns furing the season – was able to be a limited participant at practice.
Davis continued to advance through the concussion protocol set up by the NFL in 2011 and most recently updated in October 2022 throughout the week. On Thursday and Friday, the rookie running back was seen in a red non-contact jersey running through individual drills and working on special teams skills with his teammates.
Despite being limited all week and entering the weekend with a questionable designation, there was still a chance that Davis could be cleared for play. The league’s rules allow for a player to be evaluated using simulated activities if the team has no more full practices scheduled. It would be easy to think that Buffalo did just that on Saturday morning.
