Carson Wentz spent the 2024 NFL season with the Kansas City Chiefs, and the 32-year-old quarterback is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. While far from a top name in the free agent market, some teams may look for the next “Sam Darnold” in attempting to find value at the position and hope to resurrect the career of a veteran signal-caller.
In an ESPN piece detailing the latest buzz surrounding the NFL scouting combine, Wentz was referred to as a “name to watch” for the Cleveland Browns. Deshaun Watson is expected to miss most or all of the 2025 season but is guaranteed $92 million in his next two seasons.

Even if Cleveland should select a quarterback at No. 2 overall this year in the draft, pairing that rookie with a veteran would be a safe bet, according to Jeremy Fowler.
Wentz carries a projected market value of $1.9 million average annual salary by Spotrac. With the Browns carrying nearly $52 million in dead cap and already $24 million over the cap, the team’s quarterback options are limited.
The 6-foot-5, 237-pound field general hasn’t seen significant playing time since 2022, when he played eight games for the Washington Commanders.
Wentz has played for five teams in his last five seasons (Kansas City, L.A. Rams, Washington, Indianapolis and Philadelphia).
