Although the Miami Dolphins need to shore up their defensive line through the draft, they have at least made progress by enhancing their lineup. Miami is still on the hunt for a strong starter to complement Zach Sieler, but the team’s budget constraints prevent splurging on a top-tier free agent.
Therefore, they turned to their existing roster for reinforcements, which is a practical approach. On Thursday, the Dolphins announced they have re-signed Benito Jones. Jones adds reliable depth to the defensive line and integrates well into the rotation. Last season, he collaborated effectively with Sieler and stepped in for Calais Campbell.
Campbell remains a potential target for the Dolphins, who hope for his return. After losing Da’Shawn Hand to free agency, the Dolphins brought back Benito Jones. Jones spent two seasons with the Dolphins before joining the Detroit Lions in 2022. He returned to Miami on a one-year contract in 2024 and is doing so again after a lukewarm free agency experience. Joining the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2020, Jones only participated in 12% of defensive plays during his rookie year.
This percentage grew to 27% and 52% over two years in Detroit. Upon returning to Miami last year, Jones played in 45% of defensive snaps, which is commendable for a rotational player. Da’Shawn Hand, another skilled defensive tackle, signed with the Los Angeles Chargers in the first week of free agency.
His 53% share of defensive plays is expected to be filled by Jones in 2025, regardless of any new additions the Dolphins might make. All in all, Jones is a solid investment for Miami. He is diligent and consistently performs well as part of the defensive rotation. While he might not be the high-profile player Dolphins fans desire, he fits well within the defense.
