The Dallas Cowboys are optimistic about Dak Prescott’s progress in his rehabilitation but are not completely content with their quarterback lineup, considering a trade to enhance their depth. Prescott underwent hamstring surgery on November 13, which restricted him to only eight games last season. “Dak is doing exceptionally well,” stated Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones.
“He’s very pleased with his progress, and the trainers share this sentiment. I believe he’s doing an outstanding job.” The Cowboys anticipate Prescott won’t miss any games next season, although he may face some restrictions during offseason training. “There will be some limitations, but knowing Dak, he’s a hard worker.
We are extremely pleased with his progress,” said Jones. Prescott signed a four-year, $240 million contract extension with the Cowboys before last season, marking the highest annual value in NFL history. Recent videos and photos show Prescott working out with his teammates, including receivers Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Brooks.
The Cowboys are exploring all possibilities to find backup options. Although Prescott does not have an extensive injury history, the recent hamstring injury raises some concerns. The Cowboys aim to be prepared in case he misses any time and currently lack a seasoned backup.
Cooper Rush, Prescott’s longtime backup, left for the Baltimore Ravens during free agency, leaving Will Grier as the only other quarterback on the roster. “Yes, we’re still exploring options… We can pursue a trade or leverage what’s available… a trade is one possibility, and signing available players is another,” Jones mentioned regarding the backup QB role.
“We’re considering all aspects. You might not get everything exactly as desired, but our goal is to find the best candidate who can compete with [Will] Grier and contribute positively with Dak and Grier.”
Grier, a third-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2019, has been with multiple teams, including a couple of stints with the Cowboys. He’s 0-2 as a starter, recording 228 passing yards, no touchdowns, and four interceptions.
Rumors recently emerged about the Cowboys potentially trading Prescott to the Cleveland Browns, but NFL Network insider Jane Slater quickly debunked them. “I investigate thoroughly when covering this beat, and the Dallas Cowboys are NOT considering trading Dak to the Browns,” Slater said.
“In fact, messages from two sources labeled it ‘fake news’ and ‘absolutely not’ before any traction could develop.” Slater and others also emphasized that Prescott has a full no-trade clause, allowing him to reject any possible trade. With a lucrative contract already secured, Prescott has little incentive to leave Dallas, where he has spent his entire career.
