The Dallas Cowboys signed Dak Prescott to a $240 million extension last offseason. Nevertheless, they’ve recently acquired a promising young quarterback, Joe Milton, and may be considering moving on from Prescott. Despite his status as a three-time Pro Bowler, Prescott has not led the Cowboys past the divisional round of the playoffs, and the team hasn’t reached the NFC Championship since 1995.
This has stirred concerns among fans about Prescott’s ability to lead them to a Super Bowl victory. Former Green Bay Packers quarterback, Kurt Benkert, suggested a trade sending Prescott to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for TJ Watt: Cowboys would receive TJ Watt and the 21st overall pick, while the Steelers would get Dak Prescott and the 12th overall pick.
Benkert explained on X, “Steelers gain a QB and avoid contract issues while securing pick #12. Cowboys get pick #21, Watt, and can explore Milton’s potential. They’d possess the NFL’s best D-line, enhancing their chances in the NFC East.” There’s speculation that Watt might seek a trade or hold out if he doesn’t receive a contract extension soon. He recently shared a photo of himself leaving the field with a peace sign while in a Steelers jersey.
Watt, who signed a four-year, $112 million contract in 2021, is in the final year of his deal and may want more guarantees. Watt has been the Steelers’ standout player in recent years, earning seven Pro Bowl selections, four First-Team All-Pro honors, and a Defensive Player of the Year award. The challenge for the Cowboys would be managing the salaries of both Watt and Micah Parsons.
However, they could save a significant sum by opting for Milton, acquired from the New England Patriots, instead of Prescott. Milton showed promise in his week 18 start and could be capable of winning games. With a defense featuring Parsons and Watt, the Cowboys could support a developing quarterback. Meanwhile, the Steelers are waiting to see if Aaron Rodgers decides to play for them. If they grow impatient, they might pursue Prescott, signaling a new chapter for Dallas.
