Writing a children’s book was not initially part of Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey’s 2024 agenda. “It all started during training camp when my son was born,” Aubrey explained. His wife, Jennifer, welcomed their son Colton in August 2024. “I spent three days with Jen and Colton right after his birth,” Brandon shared. “The story gained attention because I kicked a pretty long field goal shortly after, which went viral for a while.”
Brandon hit a 66-yard field goal in a preseason match against the Las Vegas Raiders, still wearing his hospital bracelet. Not long after, Jefferson Knapp from Kraken Books contacted him. “I wasn’t the top student in language arts, but the producer at Kraken Books reached out, saying he loved my story,” Brandon recalled.
Jefferson and Brandon met in the fall to embark on writing “One Dream in Front of the Other.” “I narrated my story for about half an hour, and then we collaborated, bouncing ideas back and forth to create the book’s narrative,” Brandon recounted. “It mirrors my life quite closely.”
The book chronicles his achievements as a professional soccer player and the adjustments made when life takes unexpected turns, often leading to something greater than the original dream. “I want children to know that even if you achieve your dreams or fall short, it’s not the end of your journey,” he expressed. “As long as you have another dream or goal to pursue, you’ll be okay.” “One Dream in Front of the Other” is dedicated to his son Colton, now 9 months old.
Brandon and Jennifer enjoy reading the book to him. “I’ve read it to him countless times. Jen has, too,” he said. “I’ve learned many valuable life lessons, which involve sacrifices while pursuing dreams. I believe it’s vital for him to develop discipline early on.” The children’s book can be purchased online through the publisher’s website or on Amazon. Brandon expressed immense gratitude to the fans who have bought a copy. “It’s truly remarkable. I never imagined this,” he said.
“Fans have warmly embraced me back home, and it’s been fantastic. I’m at a loss for words, but very grateful.” As Brandon promotes his new book, he remains focused on the upcoming season. “In football, if you’re not continuously striving to improve, you become stagnant. And if you’re stagnant, others catch up. With just 32 positions available, someone will take your job,” Brandon noted. “For me, it means I need to keep working hard to maintain and improve my performance.”
Currently, he is kicking once or twice a week, gradually increasing workouts as training camp approaches in July. “The goal is to get the body as healthy as possible after a long season,” he said. “It depends on how my body feels. I’m working on getting my legs in shape in the weight room and rehabilitating a shoulder injury from this offseason. Preparing physically is crucial.” The 2025 NFL season kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 4, when the Cowboys face the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. The match will be broadcast on NBC 5, with the game starting at 7:20 p.m.
