BREAKING: Former Miami Dolphins linebacker Xavien Howard is working out for a possible NFL return, with Stephen Ross urging him to return to play for his former team. nhathung

Xavien Howard is poised, ready, and eager to return to the NFL after being sidelined for a year, and he’s open to hearing offers from any team, including his former squad, the Miami Dolphins. “Heading into 2025, we’re just waiting for a call to see what teams are discussing,” Howard shared on the latest Dive Bar Podcast episode. “I’m open to playing for anyone.

It’s up to them, though. I’m still fit, keeping in shape, working out, and all that.” Howard sat out the entire 2024 season after the Dolphins released him due to salary cap issues, compounded by his recovery from a significant Lisfranc foot injury, as he revealed on the podcast. He had tryouts with the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys but didn’t sign because they asked him to agree to an injury waiver, which he declined.

Howard mentioned he hasn’t spoken with the Dolphins since his release but parted on good terms with GM Chris Grier. “We haven’t talked, but Grier left the door open for me,” Howard said. “He was like, ‘just let us know’ and such, but neither of us reached out.” During the podcast, Howard received a call, and his screen went dark. Upon returning, when asked if it was Grier calling, Howard chuckled, “No, it wasn’t him,” and joked about whether he had blocked the number. He added, “Grier lives just around the corner from me!”

Surprisingly, Howard expressed a preference for Brian Flores’ coaching style over Adam Gase (2016-18) and Mike McDaniel (2022-23). “For me, Brian Flores’ approach worked best,” Howard stated. “You have to coach in a certain way. People might be sensitive now, not wanting to be yelled at, but we play a tough sport, and you have to be strong.” Howard, turning 32 on July 4th, praised Flores for his growth and ability to be genuine while winning games.

“He could have fun and laugh, but he never celebrated my successes, which I appreciated because he held everyone to the same standard,” Howard said. As the Dolphins look to 2025, Howard’s former position is uncertain with Jalen Ramsey’s return and no clear starter alongside him after Kendall Fuller’s release on February 14. The Dive Bar team inquired about third-year player Cam Smith, who was Howard’s teammate during Smith’s rookie year in 2023.

Howard hesitated before responding, “I like Cam. I liked his game from the draft. He’s got potential. But sometimes, first or second-round picks want to play immediately. When Noah Igbinoghene came, Byron Jones and I were playing, so the question was, ‘Am I taking his spot?’ It’s tough sitting out because, as cornerbacks, we must get on the field to truly learn.”

Despite having 331 tackles, 95 pass breakups, and 29 interceptions in his career—including two picks against Tom Brady and the Patriots while under the weather—Howard refrains from labeling any particular moment as his favorite with the Dolphins.
