The NFL agrees Frankie Luvu delivered a cheap shot on Jared Goff during a pick-six by the Washington Commanders last Saturday. Not that a fine helps dim the pain for anyone in the Detroit Lions organization or the fans.
Luvu was fined $16,883 for his roughing the passer blow to the head on Goff while blocking as teammate Quan Martin pranced into the end zone with a game-changing interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter of their NFC divisional playoff game at Ford Field. The NFL announced fines from last weekend’s games Saturday afternoon.
No penalty flag was thrown on the play, though a 15-yard penalty would have nullified the touchdown and put the Commanders at about the Lions’ 22-yard line. The block occurred at around the 7-yard line, and Goff went to the locker room to be checked for a concussion.
Washington, a 9½-point underdog, boatraced the Lions, 45-31, to clinch a berth in the NFC championship game Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Less than a minute after the pick-six, Luvu used an illegal hip-drop tackle on Jahmyr Gibbs, though no penalty was called. He has been fined $16,883 for unnecessary roughness, his second fine from the game.

Lions receiver Jameson Williams was fined $25,325 for unsportsmanlike conduct (obscene gesture) after his touchdown run in the second quarter. Teddy Bridgewater was in the game then, as Goff came back on the sidelines with his helmet on, cleared to return.
It’s Williams’ fourth fine of the season, not including his two-game PED suspension, when he forfeited $210,270.
