Robert Saleh previously served as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, during which he built a dominant defense that helped the team reach the Super Bowl. After leaving the 49ers, Saleh became the head coach of the New York Jets but was dismissed in October 2024 following a disappointing start to the season. His return to San Francisco is expected to reinvigorate the team’s defensive unit.

At the Pro Bowl event in Orlando, Fred Warner shared his thoughts on Saleh’s return:

“This means a lot,” Warner said. “Obviously, Coach Saleh was great for us and for me personally as a young player. So, it’s going to be exciting to work with him again now that I’m a veteran. It’s going to be fun.”

Warner also emphasized the importance of restoring the defense’s dominance under Saleh’s leadership:

“Just getting back to dominance,” Warner said. “That’s what I’m used to, and it’s going to take a lot of work and effort, but I know we have the capability to do it.”

Nick Bosa also expressed his excitement about Saleh’s return and his impact on teammate Dre Greenlaw. Speaking about Greenlaw’s future with the team, Bosa said:

“Greenlaw is going to do what’s best for him, and he should do that at this point in his career,” Bosa said. “Obviously, we want him back. I know Saleh is very adamant about that.”

The reappointment of Robert Saleh is expected to bring renewed energy and effectiveness to the 49ers’ defense, helping the team reclaim its reputation as one of the league’s most formidable defensive units.
