Los Angeles, CA — In an extraordinary act of compassion and gratitude, Freddie Freeman and the entire Los Angeles Dodgers organization have donated $12.5 million to transform a residential property into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth in Los Angeles. The heartfelt gesture was made on behalf of Head Coach Dave Roberts, as a profound thank-you for the leadership, love, and life lessons he has imparted to the team.

The announcement sent shockwaves through the sports world—not because of the amount, but because of the message behind it.

“Coach Roberts has given us so much more than strategy and motivation,” said Freeman. “He’s shown us what it means to lead with heart, to serve with humility, and to care deeply for the community that supports us. This is our way of paying it forward, in his honor.”

The shelter, which will open later this year, aims to provide safe housing, educational support, mental health resources, job training, and mentorship for vulnerable youth struggling with homelessness across the city. With LA’s growing crisis of youth living without permanent housing, this initiative couldn’t come at a more critical time.

Coach Dave Roberts, visibly moved by the announcement, spoke with emotion:

“I’m humbled beyond words. This team means the world to me—but knowing they’re using their platform to make real, lasting change… that’s the ultimate victory.”

The project is expected to serve hundreds of teens each year and will be managed in partnership with local nonprofit organizations already doing essential work in the homelessness space.

More Than a Game

This donation isn’t just a tribute to Coach Roberts—it’s a defining moment that shows how sports can transcend the field. The Dodgers, long known for their excellence in baseball, have now proven they’re champions of humanity too.

As headlines focus on stats, trades, and trophies, this story stands out as a reminder that the greatest legacies are built off the field—in the lives we touch, and the hearts we uplift.
