The Houston Texans absolutely nailed one of the biggest things they needed to nail when it came to the NFL. It’s imperative that when you are rebuilding a team, you get the head coach and quarterback decisions right. And, they have done that. But I don’t think it’s possible to talk enough about how hard it is to do that and how easy they made it look.
DeMeco Ryans had never been a head coach before, just a defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. And C.J. Stroud was a quarterback that everyone started to doubt during the draft process, all because some test he did wasn’t good enough, and now he’s the best player from his draft class by far.
But, the Texans have more than just “nailed” the hiring of those two. Not only are the two of them great at their respected positions, two of the best in the league at those positions, but they are doing things no HC-QB duo has ever done.
Think about all of the great duos the history of this league has had, like Tom Brady and Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots, or even Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, and yet none of them have done what the Texans have.
Texans QB-HC duo makes history
According to The 33rd Team, the Texans have the first QB-HC duo ever to win their division in their first two seasons. Last season they clinched the division with that extra playoff game they won in Week 18 over the Indianapolis Colts. This week, with a win over the Miami Dolphins and the Denver Broncos beating the Colts, the Texans clinched the division again.
Now, let’s be real. The other two duos I mentioned haven’t done it because they either didn’t start their first season and sat the bench or for some other reason. Nonetheless, this is a huge accomplishment and something that the franchise needs to be praised for more.
The Texans have their dudes, and while it wasn’t easy, they have made it look easy when other franchises are still trying to do that.
