Today, we mourn the loss of a Miami Dolphins legend, as Howard Twilley, the Hall of Fame wide receiver for the undefeated 1972 Dolphins and Super Bowl VII champion, has passed away at the age of 81. Twilley’s passing marks the end of an era for the Dolphins, a franchise that has been blessed with a rich history of talented players, but few have left an indelible mark on the organization as Twilley did.
Born on November 1, 1942, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Twilley was a standout athlete in high school, earning All-American honors in football and track. He went on to play college football at the University of Tulsa, setting multiple records and earning All-American recognition twice. The Dolphins selected Twilley in the first round of the 1970 NFL Draft, and he quickly established himself as a key contributor to the team’s aerial attack.
Twilley’s most notable moment came during the 1972 season, when the Dolphins completed an unprecedented 17-0 campaign, culminating in a dominant 14-7 victory over the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII. Twilley, who played in every game of that championship season, hauled in 48 receptions for 773 yards, ranking among the league leaders. His remarkable performance in that championship game remains one of the most memorable moments in NFL history.
Throughout his nine-year career with the Dolphins, Twilley accumulated an impressive 523 receptions for 7,778 yards, ranking him among the top 10 in NFL history at the time of his retirement. He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and earned Second-Team All-Pro honors in 1972.
Twilley’s influence extended far beyond his on-field accomplishments. He was an integral part of the Dolphins’ leadership group, serving as team captain and mentoring younger players. His dedication, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to excellence have inspired generations of Dolphins players.
“Howard Twilley was more than just a legendary receiver; he was a true leader, a mentor, and a friend,” said Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross. “His passing is a devastating loss for the entire Dolphins family, and our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”
As news of Twilley’s passing spread, tributes began to pour in from around the NFL, with many former players, coaches, and colleagues praising his remarkable career and enduring legacy.
“Howard was a giant of a man, both physically and figuratively,” said Dolphins Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Griese. “His dedication to the game and his teammates were unmatched, and he will always be remembered as one of the greatest receivers in Dolphins history.”
Twilley is survived by his wife, Barbara, and their children, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by the Dolphins organization, his former teammates, and fans from coast to coast.
As we reflect on Twilley’s remarkable life and career, we honor his legacy by remembering his unwavering passion for the game, his unshakeable commitment to excellence, and his enduring impact on the Miami Dolphins and the NFL as a whole.
