Football enthusiasts have heard the phrase “He’s in the best shape of his life” so often that it’s become tiresome and insincere. With that in mind, let’s refrain from using it when discussing where Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott stands as the 2025 NFL season approaches.
Agreed. However, this informal pact shouldn’t deter us from delving into a notable storyline: the $240 million quarterback is shedding pounds after missing the majority of the 2024 season due to a hamstring injury that ended his season. Practice footage had already hinted at this transformation, but on Tuesday, tight end Jake Ferguson amplified the narrative by asserting on Instagram that Prescott has lost 50 pounds.
“Slim reaper,” Ferguson’s post reads, with the camera focused on Prescott. “Down 50 LB! Looking like a young 4.” Prescott shared the post with a humorous caption, “Slimothy, that’s me.” While losing 50 pounds is likely an exaggeration, it sends a clear message about Prescott’s ambitions. After a season-ending injury in 2024, it seems the veteran quarterback aims to be more slender when the season starts in September.
This decision could influence his performance: Since breaking his ankle in 2020, Prescott has run less frequently and less effectively. Moreover, injuries have become more frequent for Dak, causing him to miss significant playing time in three of the past five seasons. Achieving an optimal weight could lead to better injury resistance and increased availability.
Additionally, Prescott will turn 32 in late July, and at this stage of his career, maintaining longevity is essential. The best shape of his life? Perhaps not, but that’s not the point here. What truly matters is that a leaner Prescott is a more effective Prescott. And, “Slim Reaper” isn’t a bad nickname, either.
