The Detroit Lions’ shock playoff exit occurred just days ago with one prominent coach leaving as four more could be set to follow, all being incredibly vital to their recent success…
The Detroit Lions look set to lose several key coaches after offensive coordinator Ben Johnson joined the Chicago Bears, with the New England Patriots hiring their defensive line coach and several others rumored to be getting promotions elsewhere.
The Lions season abruptly ended after their defeat to the Washington Commanders in their first game of the playoffs, losing despite being a massive 9.5 favorite. Just hours after the loss, Johnson, who had been seen as the best offensive coordinator in football, was announced as Bears head coach.
Johnson appeared to be the premiere target for NFL teams this offseason with every team needing a coach requesting an interview with him, after he led Detroit to having the number-one ranked defense in the league.
And while he’ll be a monumental loss, Johnson will not be the last to leave the team this offseason, with Aaron Glenn looking set to become the head coach of the New York Jets. Glenn had been the defensive coordinator for the Lions for the past four years, making improvement with their unit each year, despite the team having a whopping 14 players injured on their defense.
The Lions might have hoped to give their defensive line coach, Terrell Williams, the promotion to defensive coordinator, but on Wednesday morning it had emerged that he would become the Patriots DC.
As well as Johnson, Glenn and Williams, offensive line coach Hank Fraley also looks like he’s heading for the exit. Recognized as the best offensive line coach in the league, Fraley has interviewed with the Seattle Seahawks twice for their offensive coordinator role, while reports have emerged that he could join Johnson with the Bears.

The Lions are seemingly not looking to promote Fraley and risk losing him, with current passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand likely to be the new OC, taking over from Johnson.
Finally, Lions quarterback coach Mark Brunell could also leave the coaching staff, with Glenn said to have interest in bringing him to the Jets should he land the head coaching role.
Detroit has already begun it’s search to replace Johnson, with Jared Goff to have a ‘significant input’ on the matter. While Engstrand is the runaway favorite, Lions head coach Dan Campbell had already spoken on how the team would approach losing and replacing Johnson.
Speaking on Monday before Johnson was announced as Bears head coach, Campbell said: “A lot. I want his input. To me, that’s important. That’s important. That’s what Ben did a great job of, those guys working together. The system was kind of built from the ground up and it was to help him and for him to be a part of. So yeah, that’s huge. He’ll have a lot of input. What he says, says a lot to me. Now, is it gonna be the ultimate decision? No, it’s not. But what he says is gonna mean a lot to me.”
