The Detroit Lions had one of the best offensive season in NFL history during the 2024 regular season as they led the league with 33.2 points per game.

That success was due in large part to their running game.

Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery propelled that offense and formed one of the most feared backfields in the league.

Now it seems they have much loftier goals on their minds for the future.

During an interview with NFL Network’s Mike Robinson, Montgomery revealed that he believes he and Gibbs will go down as the best RB duo in league history.

Definitely the best running back duo in the league, but me and Jahmyr, that’s my dog. You got to be in a position, in a mental headspace, to be selfish enough to be appreciative of somebody else’s success. I think a lot of people forget that we’re all competitors, and we all want to play ball. We all want to be the guy, but sometimes you got to be selfish for the greater good of the team. So being able to be teamed up with somebody of Jahmyr’s magnitude and to be able to do it with him and do it together, I think is super special. And when it’s all said and done, when me and him are done playing together, we’ll be the best running back duo to ever play together.

It’s hard to pin down exactly who the best RB duo in history is right now. There have been seven teams in NFL history to have two 1000-yard rushers. Two of those included a quarterback, leaving five options from that list.

However, I believe the current top duo only includes one player from that list.

The duo is 2017 Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram.

In Kamara’s rookie year, the two running backs combined for a staggering 3000 total yards and 25 touchdowns. Kamara earned All-Pro, Pro Bowl, and Offensive Rookie of the Year honors while Ingram also got a spot in the Pro Bowl.

Gibbs and Montgomery have had a couple solid seasons of their own together.

They combined for 2393 total yards and 24 TDs in their first year together. In 2024, the combo got even better as they combined for 3045 yards and 32 touchdowns with Gibbs earning a Pro Bowl nod.

It sounds like the duo has even bigger plans for 2025 as they chase the title of best running duo in NFL history.
