Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma has caught the attention of Green Bay Packers’ head coach Matt LaFleur. Elgersma arrived in Green Bay on Thursday to participate in the rookie mini-camp held from Friday to Saturday. “We conducted a workout with our tryout players, and he has a very lively arm. This was evident on tape.
He participated in the Senior Bowl, and [passing game coordinator Jason] Vrable had the chance to watch him there. I reviewed the footage from the Senior Bowl and discussed it with Vrable,” LaFleur stated. “We hosted him on a 30 visit, allowing us to sit down with him. He’s another individual who has a passion for football.
Observing him throw, it’s clear he has a lively arm, and there’s much to admire about him.” The 23-year-old standout from Wilfrid Laurier University received over a dozen invitations to rookie mini-camps following the 2025 NFL Draft. The Packers have shown a pattern of evaluating and gathering information on Elgersma throughout the process. Vrable observed him closely at the Senior Bowl, Green Bay dispatched a scout to his pro day in March, and the team invited him for a top 30 visit in April.
Elgersma completed 73.5 percent of his passes for 4,011 yards, recorded 34 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, and rushed 40 times for 223 yards with six touchdowns in his senior year with the Golden Hawks. He achieved an 11-1 record and led Laurier to a Vanier Cup appearance. His efforts earned him the Hec Crighton Trophy, recognizing him as the top player in U Sports football, Canada’s version of the Heisman Trophy.
“You’re looking for attributes,” LaFleur commented on evaluating Elgersma’s transition from Canadian university football to the NFL. “Moving from his background to this level presents a significant learning curve, but if anyone will tackle it directly, Taylor will. This was evident during his 30 visit. I know he’s been diligently working on it.
From my discussions with Vrable, the progress he’s likely made from the Senior Bowl to now has been remarkable.” Green Bay currently has three quarterbacks under contract: franchise player Jordan Love, backup Malik Willis, and third-string Sean Clifford. Love was chosen in the first round, 26th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Willis was acquired in an August 2024 trade with the Tennessee Titans for a seventh-round selection. Clifford was picked in the fifth round, 149th overall during the 2023 NFL Draft. The 45-year-old LaFleur was questioned about whether he plans to leave rookie mini-camp with four quarterbacks on his roster. “Whatever’s best for our team,” he replied with a sly grin.
