Linebacker K.J. Britt is making a move within Florida as he switches NFL teams. After four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the former Auburn star is now part of the Miami Dolphins. Britt became a free agent without restrictions on Wednesday afternoon.
Reports from the South Florida Sun Sentinel and ESPN on Thursday confirmed that Britt has agreed to a one-year deal with the Dolphins. In 2024, Britt recorded 72 tackles for Tampa Bay across 14 games. On the Dolphins’ current lineup, Britt is expected to lead the depth chart at inside linebacker alongside returning starter Jordyn Brooks.
Drafted by the Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Tampa Bay had Lavonte David and Devin White firmly in their inside-linebacker roles, which meant Britt spent most of his first three seasons focused on special teams. By the 11th game of his third season in the NFL, Britt had participated in 815 special-teams plays—148 more than any other Buccaneers player in that period.
However, he exceeded 13 defensive snaps in a game just once, and before his first NFL start on Dec. 3, 2023, he had appeared in 17 defensive snaps during the 2023 season. Injuries to David and White towards the end of 2023 gave Britt more opportunities, despite being injured twice himself, including an incident requiring him to be carted off.
Britt started six of the Buccaneers’ last eight games, including both playoff matchups—a 32-9 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 15 and a 31-23 defeat to the Detroit Lions on Jan. 21. After the 2023 season, White joined the Eagles through free agency, positioning Britt as a starter alongside David.
Britt began the first 11 games of the 2024 season but suffered an ankle injury in a 30-7 triumph over the New York Giants on Nov. 24, limiting him to 66 defensive snaps in Tampa Bay’s seven remaining games. Before his time at Auburn and in the NFL, Britt was an All-State player at Oxford High School in 2015 and 2016.
