The NFL community may continue to scrutinize Micah Parsons’ activity on social media, but that won’t stop him from expressing his thoughts on football matters. On Friday, he turned his attention to the business side, sharing a seemingly unprovoked note about football agents, praising his own representative, David Mulugheta from Athletes First, as a positive example.
“Some of these agents don’t have your best interests at heart, folks!” Parsons shared in a message apparently aimed at fellow NFL players. “Wake up! (Agent) David Mulugheta has consistently demonstrated this! It’s disheartening to see some players being taken advantage of by teams due to their agents’ lack of integrity and effort!”
Although the timing of Parsons’ post seems random, it followed Clarence Hill Jr.’s report for All City DLLS. This report highlighted Parsons’ admission that no substantial discussions have occurred with the Dallas Cowboys about his upcoming contract extension, though his post might be unrelated.
One possible explanation could be that Parsons is responding to the contentious details surrounding Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins’ recent contract deal.
Despite Higgins becoming the eighth highest-paid receiver in the NFL, emerging details have shown the Bengals retained significant control over his future with what essentially amounts to year-to-year team options. Amidst negotiation troubles with the Bengals, Higgins dismissed Mulugheta before hiring Ja’Marr Chase’s agent. This decision ultimately kept Higgins in Cincinnati, though some may wonder at what price.
Could Parsons’ message hint at a challenging negotiation path with the Cowboys? Regardless of what motivated Parsons to post on Friday, it’s hard not to ponder what it implies for his own circumstances. In my opinion, it merely confirms what should already be apparent: He is on the brink of becoming the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
This should be evident, but for months now, fans and media have debated whether he’d accept a “hometown discount.” Earlier this year, Parsons mentioned to the press that he didn’t need to be the highest-paid NFL player. He often spoke of securing a deal swiftly so the team could spend freely in free agency. At one point, he even mentioned he’d take a pay cut if the Cowboys traded for Myles Garrett.
Nonetheless, it’s apparent that Parsons isn’t going to settle for less than his value, nor should he. His endorsement of Mulugheta’s commitment to his best interests indicates that Micah will entrust his agent with the negotiations.
This, in turn, suggests no discount is forthcoming for the Cowboys. With this and Hill Jr.’s report on the negotiation status, Cowboys fans would be wise to prepare for a prolonged negotiation process between the management and their star defender. Just last year, Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb had to take their negotiations to the wire, securing long-term deals right before the regular season began.
This situation might be similar. Mulugheta represents several NFL players who have recently secured significant contract extensions, including Jordan Love, Derek Stingley, Justin Fields, Christian Wilkins, Jaycee Horn, among others.
