On Black Friday, both of the Chiefs’ offensive tackles struggled to slow down the Raiders’ pass rush. However, left tackle Wanya Morris struggled the most and was ultimately benched. Morris’s benching left fans with questions about the left tackle spot, which Andy Reid answered on Monday.
According to PFF, Morris allowed one sack, one QB hit, six QB hurries, and eight QB pressures. Morris’s poor performance led the Chiefs to bench him at the start of the fourth quarter and move left guard Joe Thuney to left tackle.
During his Monday press conference, Reid said it wasn’t fair to D.J. Humphries to name him the starter this week yet. “If he feels OK, we’ll give him an opportunity.” He added that Thuney is an option at left tackle this week if Humphries isn’t ready.
Obviously, the best-case scenario for the Chiefs is that Humphries is healthy enough to play against the Chargers on Sunday night. If he isn’t, the Chiefs could be forced to play against a top-five defense with Thuney playing outside instead of inside.
The first time these two teams played this season, the Chiefs allowed three sacks from the Chargers edge rushers. So, moving Thuney outside for this week might seem logical.
Despite that, not having Thuney on the inside could mean Chargers defensive coordinator Jessie Minter overloads the inside creating interior pressure.
Interior pressure is a lot worse than exterior pressure because the quarterback can’t step up through interior pressure. Hopefully, Humphries is good to go for Sunday Night Football because if he isn’t, things could get uglier for the Chiefs offensive line.
