After starting the season being nominated as the ‘Biggest Trash Talker’ in the NFL…
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has officially been named the 2024 recipient of the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. The award, created in 2014 and named after Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr., is given annually to the NFL player who best exemplifies sportsmanship on the field.
Each NFL team nominates one player for the honor, and from that pool of 32, eight finalists are selected by members of the NFL Legends Community. The final vote is then cast by players league-wide as part of the 2024 Pro Bowl Games ballot.
While there’s no doubt that Allen is a leader, he is also a fierce competitor, so his selection for this award is just another chapter in what might end up being the most delightfully contradictory season of an NFL career.
In 2024, Allen was somehow crowned both the “Most Overrated Player” in the NFL and the league MVP. He was also voted the league’s biggest trash talker — only to then turn around and win The Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. It’s like the football gods can’t decide what to make of QB17.
One moment, Allen’s trash talking defenders, the next, he’s shaking hands, helping opponents up off the turf. He’s a walking contradiction: He talks trash, but also, he’s one of the most well-respected players in the game.
And really, isn’t that one of the things that make him so entertaining and why so many fans love him? He’s never just one thing. He’s the Quarterback who plays like a Linebacker, the SUPERSTAR who still somehow feels under appreciated and under valued, the player who can be both the biggest competitor and the biggest sportsman at the same time.
Just another thing to add to the legend of all things Josh Allen.
