Baker Mayfield always had the talent to be highly successful in the NFL. He’s the only quarterback to lead the Cleveland Browns to a playoff win since their return in the late 90s.
Now, as the signal-caller and face of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mayfield has a new title to wear:
Fantasy Quarterback Star.
Fantasy expert Matthew Berry believes that Mayfield’s play, coupled with the fact that the Bucs are returning most of their star receivers on offense, should allow for another dynamic season from the Heisman Trophy winner.
“Since the start of last season, no player in the NFL has more passing TDs than Baker Mayfield. And yes, Liam Coen moves on, but that was the argument two years ago when Dave Canales moved on. Their new offensive coordinator was their passing game coordinator last year. It’s going to be the exact same offense. It’s all the same personnel,” Berry said. “The fact that they brought Godwin back. That Evans is going to be back. It’s a pretty good offensive line. And to me actually, I feel better about Baker going into this year than I did last year.”
Mayfield has thrown 69 touchdowns to 28 interceptions in his first two seasons with the Buccaneers. He has led the team to back-to-back NFC South appearances and a playoff victory in 2024.
The thing still alluding Mayfield, though is a spot in the conference title game. The former Oklahoma product has reached the divisional round twice, but lost both road contests.
If Mayfield wants to go from top fantasy signal-caller to Super Bowl caliber quarterback, getting a home game in those divisional round contests will be incredibly important moving forward.
