BREAKING NEWS: Ex-Bears $30 million starter predicted to land with Cowboys after recent release.

It’s been a rough season for all of the Chicago Bears, but even rougher for those who are no longer with the team.

Head coach Matt Eberflus was the latest Bears casualty, and offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was also let go a few weeks back. But there was also a once-touted Bears starter who found himself out of work amid the team’s poor performance this year.

The Bears thought they had one of their starters of the present and future when they signed guard Nate Davis to a three-year, $30 million contract before the 2023 season. But Davis struggled so much that he found himself benched after two games this season, then cut in mid-November.

Davis cleared waivers, so any team can now pick him up for the rest of the season if they see fit. And there may be another NFC team so decimated on the offensive line that the ex-Bear could earn himself another shot.

On Monday, Alex Holder of Bleacher Report predicted that the Dallas Cowboys, who have won their last two games to get back to 5-7 on the year, would sign Davis as valuable guard depth for the rest of the season.

“The Cowboys are beaten up at guard with Tyler Smith, Zack Martin, Chuma Edoga and Asim Richards all suffering injuries recently. So, the offense might need an extra body just to get through the season,” Holder said.

“Additionally, Martin is an impending free agent and Davis is only 28 years old, meaning the organization could use the rest of the season to see if the former Bear could be a more long-term solution.”

Davis played just 131 snaps in five appearances this season, so the Bears hardly got any utility out of the money they spent on him, $19.25 million of which was guaranteed. He’ll be off their books for the 2025 season, but the offensive line remains shaky in his absence.

The Bears once thought highly of Davis, so some would certainly be happy to see him get another shot with a new team. But it would also sting to see Davis play like a star after the performance that prompted Chicago to dump him in the first place.
