A Heart Like Home Base: Freddie Freeman’s $3.3 Million Gift Creates Haven for Homeless Youth

In a move that has left his hometown in tears of gratitude, Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman has transformed the meaning of “coming home” for countless vulnerable young people in Fountain Valley, California. The six-time All-Star and World Series champion has donated an astounding $3.3 million to convert his family’s long-held property into a comprehensive shelter for homeless youth, bringing hope to a community that helped shape his extraordinary journey.

Standing on the grounds where generations of Freemans once gathered for Sunday barbecues and impromptu baseball games, the first baseman’s voice wavered slightly as he addressed the crowd at yesterday’s groundbreaking ceremony.

“This land holds every memory that made me who I am,” Freeman shared, his eyes glistening under the California sun. “The catches with my dad, the dreams we built here… I can think of no better purpose for this place than to become a foundation for kids who need someone to believe in them, just like this community believed in me.”

For Freeman, the decision transcends typical philanthropy. His connection to Fountain Valley runs as deep as the roots of the old oak tree that still stands on the property—the same tree where his initials, carved as a hopeful teenager, remain visible today.

“In every swing, every play—I carry a part of Fountain Valley with me,” Freeman said. “This place taught me discipline, heart, and what it means to be part of a community. What I’m doing now is just a small return for everything it gave me. I want these kids to know—I’m here for them, and so is the game that changed my life.”

The shelter, to be named “Chelsea’s Haven” in honor of Freeman’s late mother who lost her battle with melanoma when he was just ten years old, will accommodate up to 32 homeless youth between the ages of 14 and 21. Beyond providing beds and meals, the facility will offer educational support, career counseling, mental health services, and—true to Freeman’s passion—a baseball diamond where residents can learn the game that taught him perseverance.

Local homeless youth advocate Maria Sanchez couldn’t hold back tears as she explained what this means for the community. “Do you understand what happens when someone like Freddie doesn’t just write a check but gives a piece of his heart? These kids who’ve been told they don’t matter suddenly realize they matter to Freddie Freeman. That changes everything.”

Indeed, the impact of Freeman’s gift extends far beyond the physical structure. For 17-year-old Jason Martinez, who has spent the last eight months sleeping in various temporary shelters across Orange County, the announcement represents something he’d nearly abandoned: hope.

“I used to watch Freeman play when I was little, before everything fell apart at home,” Martinez said, fidgeting with a worn Dodgers cap. “Knowing he sees us, knows we exist—it makes me feel like maybe I could be something too.”

The three-acre property will undergo extensive renovation over the next nine months, with Freeman personally involved in the design process. The existing family home will be converted into administrative offices and counseling spaces, while new dormitory-style buildings will be constructed to provide private rooms for residents. A community kitchen, where Freeman plans to occasionally serve meals himself during the off-season, will become the heart of the facility.

Freeman’s former high school baseball coach, Thomas Reynolds, wiped away tears throughout the ceremony. “This is the Freddie I’ve always known,” he said. “Even as a teenager, he understood that his talents weren’t just for his own glory. When your best player is also your most compassionate human, it changes the entire team. Now he’s changing an entire community.”

Chelsea’s Haven represents a deeply personal mission for Freeman, whose own understanding of home was forever altered by the loss of his mother at such a young age. Though his father, Fred, worked tirelessly to provide stability, Freeman has often spoken about the profound sense of loss that shaped his childhood.

“Home isn’t just a place,” Freeman explained, his voice breaking slightly. “It’s knowing you’re safe, you’re valued, you matter to someone. My dad created that for me after we lost mom. Not every kid has that. Chelsea’s Haven is about giving these young people what every child deserves—a foundation to build their dreams on.”

Freeman’s teammates have rallied around the project, with several Dodgers stars pledging additional support. The organization itself has committed to providing job training opportunities and internships for shelter residents interested in sports management, marketing, or facility operations.

As the ceremony concluded, Freeman walked the property one last time as a family home, stopping to place his hand on the old oak tree. A young girl approached him shyly, holding a baseball card with his image. After signing it, Freeman knelt to meet her eyes.

“This is your home now too,” he told her. “Promise me you’ll swing for the fences.”

For the children of Fountain Valley who have known only uncertainty, Freddie Freeman has delivered the most important home run of his career—one that won’t be measured in statistics or championships, but in lives forever changed by a hometown hero who never forgot where he came from.
