In a move that’s sending shockwaves through the sports world and thrilling fans of “America’s Team,” Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of “The Underdog”, a bold and emotional new documentary series that charts the dramatic and often turbulent history of the Dallas Cowboys.
Set to premiere on November 7, 2025, the series promises an unfiltered look at one of the NFL’s most celebrated, criticized, and obsessively followed franchises.
The Rise, Fall, and Reinvention of “America’s Team”
While the Cowboys have long been seen as a symbol of wealth, glamor, and power in professional sports, “The Underdog” tells a deeper story — one of high expectations, crushing losses, unforgettable characters, and relentless media scrutiny. It explores what it truly means to carry the weight of being the most polarizing team in football.
From the iconic Super Bowl teams of the 1970s, to the flashy dominance of the 1990s dynasty, to the rollercoaster years of Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, and the current Dak Prescott–Micah Parsons era, the documentary doesn’t shy away from the drama, dysfunction, and devotion that define the Cowboys.
All-Star Cast and Production Team
Directed by Allen Hughes (The Defiant Ones, Dear Mama), and produced in partnership with NFL Films and Netflix Sports, the series features exclusive interviews with:
-
Troy Aikman
-
Emmitt Smith
-
Michael Irvin
-
Jimmy Johnson
-
Jerry Jones
-
DeMarcus Ware
-
Tony Romo, Dak Prescott, and Micah Parsons
Also appearing are longtime Cowboys critics and fans alike — from Stephen A. Smith to Skip Bayless, as well as pop culture figures like Post Malone and Matthew McConaughey, who share their emotional ties to the team.
“This isn’t just a football story. This is a story about the burden of being famous, the pain of falling short, and the magic of still believing,” said director Hughes. “The Cowboys are the ultimate American paradox — powerful but vulnerable, hated but loved.”
What to Expect
“The Underdog” will be released as a six-part limited series, with each episode spotlighting a key era in Cowboys history. It will delve into behind-the-scenes power struggles, locker room tensions, miracle wins, gut-wrenching defeats, and the ongoing pursuit of a return to Super Bowl glory.
The series will also include never-before-seen footage from inside The Star in Frisco and AT&T Stadium, as well as raw, personal moments from players past and present.
Release Date & Reception
The full series will drop on November 7, 2025, and Netflix is already calling it a “flagship sports docuseries” for the fall. The teaser trailer — released this morning — features a stirring voiceover from Emmitt Smith, slow-motion highlights of Cowboys heartbreaks and triumphs, and a final shot of the Lombardi Trophy surrounded by dust-covered helmets.
From Super Bowl parades to locker room chaos, from dynasty dreams to decades of doubt — The Underdog is the untold story of the Dallas Cowboys. And this fall, the world will finally see why no team draws more love, more hate, and more headlines.
