Steelers predicted to sign projected $160 million quarterback after DK Metcalf trade image

The Pittsburgh Steelers pulled off what will be one of the biggest moves of the entire offseason when they struck a deal with the Seattle Seahawks for DK Metcalf. Now, the Steelers have to find someone to throw him the football.

Pittsburgh will almost certainly go the veteran quarterback route with the team trying to win now. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields remain in play, and a new report suggests Aaron Rodgers is a legit option, also.

However, Matt Shovelson of TWSN is predicting the Steelers will go in a different route and sign Minnesota Vikings pending free agent, Sam Darnold.

“With the improved weapons and the solid rushing game in Pittsburgh, all their QB needs to do to be successful is get their weapons the ball, which Darnold can do,” Shovelson wrote. “Last season Darnold threw for 4,300 yards and 35 touchdowns, both career highs, and is looking to improve those marks. He found success in Minnesota by getting Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and Aaron Jones the ball, and if he can do the same in Pittsburgh he should find loads of success.”

Of course, Darnold spent the 2024 campaign with the Vikings, where he served as the starter and bridge option for J.J. McCarthy. Darnold went on to post his best season in the pros and revived his career by throwing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns to 12 picks, which earned him a Pro Bowl nod.

The major blemish on his season came over the final two games, when he didn’t play well in the winner-take-all Week 18 game against the Detroit Lions and the wild-card contest against the Los Angeles Rams.

Even still, Darnold, who is not expected back in Minnesota, is arguably the best quarterback option on the market and is going to land a nice payday.

Reports have linked the Steelers to Darnold, with The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reporting that the team would make an offer to the veteran quarterback. Thus, he remains a realistic option for Pittsburgh.

Spotrac projects Darnold will land a four-year, $160 million deal. That’s on the high end of what the former No. 3 overall pick will command and we think it’ll come in lower than that. Either way, the Steelers can afford it.
