HOUSTON, TX — In a historic and emotional announcement, the Houston Texans football organization has confirmed plans to erect a statue of legendary wide receiver and recent Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Andre Johnson, immortalizing the franchise icon outside NRG Stadium. The tribute is scheduled to commence construction in early September 2025, with a formal unveiling planned for the 2026 NFL season opener.

This move marks a significant milestone for the Texans, who will be honoring their first-ever Hall of Fame player—a trailblazer who defined the franchise’s early years and whose impact continues to resonate with fans and teammates alike.

A Fitting Tribute to a Franchise Cornerstone

Andre Johnson, selected third overall in the 2003 NFL Draft, spent the majority of his 14-year NFL career with the Texans. Over the course of 12 seasons in Houston, he became the team’s all-time leader in nearly every receiving category, including:

  • 1,012 receptions

  • 13,597 receiving yards

  • 64 receiving touchdowns

Beyond the numbers, Johnson symbolized consistency, leadership, and loyalty during a time when the Texans were still establishing their identity in the NFL.

“This statue isn’t just about football,” said Texans CEO Cal McNair during the announcement press conference. “It’s about honoring a man who helped build the culture of this organization—who played through injuries, never asked for the spotlight, and gave everything to this city.”

A Monument for the Fans—and the Future

The bronze statue will stand in Liberty White Plaza, just outside the stadium’s south gate, where fans gather before home games. The statue is expected to be larger than life, capturing Johnson in a signature pose: hands extended, eyes locked on the ball, mid-air, representing the kind of spectacular catches that made him a household name.

The team has enlisted renowned sports sculptor Brian Hanlon, whose work includes statues of Jackie Robinson, Shaquille O’Neal, and other athletic legends. Hanlon expressed deep respect for the project:

“Andre’s presence was powerful—on and off the field. My goal is to capture not just his athleticism, but the quiet intensity and dignity with which he carried himself.”

Fans will also be invited to leave personal messages that will be engraved on bricks placed around the statue’s base.

A Hall of Fame Journey

Johnson was officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2025, following his third year of eligibility. He became the first player in Texans history to earn the sport’s highest honor.

During his Hall of Fame speech, Johnson emotionally thanked the city of Houston:

“I came here a kid from Miami, and this city welcomed me like one of its own. I never played for the spotlight—I played for the people. For my teammates. For the fans in these stands every Sunday. This means more than I can ever say.”

Johnson’s career also included seven Pro Bowl selections, two NFL receiving titles, and countless moments of brilliance in clutch situations.

Fans and Teammates Celebrate

News of the statue has sparked an outpouring of emotion from fans and former teammates.

Texans legend J.J. Watt posted on social media:

“Long overdue. Dre is not just the best WR in Texans history—he’s one of the best to ever play the game. This statue will be a beacon for generations of fans.”

Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who played alongside Johnson early in his own career, said:

“Andre taught me how to be a pro. Everything I know about work ethic and humility, I learned from watching him.”

Legacy Cemented in Bronze and in Hearts

For a franchise often defined by growing pains and rebuilding years, Andre Johnson remains a constant reminder of excellence. His quiet leadership, physical dominance, and commitment to the city helped elevate the Texans from expansion team to respected contender.

“Statues are for legends,” said McNair. “And there’s no greater legend in Texans history than Andre Johnson.”

As the Texans prepare for a new era under rising stars and a retooled roster, the statue will stand as both a memorial to the past and a challenge to the future—a physical representation of what it means to wear the Texans uniform with honor.

What’s Next?

Construction of the statue begins September 15, 2025, and fans can expect updates and behind-the-scenes looks at the process throughout the year via the Texans’ official platforms.

A grand unveiling ceremony will be held before kickoff of the Texans’ 2026 home opener, with Johnson, Hall of Famers, teammates, and fans in attendance. The team also announced plans for an Andre Johnson Day featuring tributes, highlight reels, and community events.

For the Houston Texans and their fans, this statue isn’t just a celebration of a player—it’s a lasting tribute to a legacy.
