The ceremony, held in Canton, Ohio, was emotional and filled with tributes to Butler’s impact both on and off the field. Wearing his signature wide smile, Butler addressed fans, teammates, and family as he accepted football’s highest individual honor.

“This moment means everything,” Butler said. “I always believed that if you work hard, stay humble, and love the game, great things will happen. I’m proud to represent the Green Bay Packers and the fans who made my career unforgettable.”

Drafted by the Packers in the second round of the 1990 NFL Draft, Butler quickly became a leader in the secondary. Known for his versatility and instinct, he revolutionized the role of the strong safety, becoming the first player in NFL history to record a sack, interception, fumble recovery, and touchdown in a single season.

Butler’s career was defined not only by his playmaking ability but also by his signature celebration — the “Lambeau Leap” — which began in 1993 after he returned a fumble for a touchdown and spontaneously jumped into the stands. The celebration became a staple of Packers culture and remains one of the most iconic traditions in the NFL.

Over his 12-season career, Butler was selected to four Pro Bowls and named First-Team All-Pro four times. He was instrumental in Green Bay’s Super Bowl XXXI victory in 1997, where the Packers defeated the New England Patriots 35–21.
