Alec Bohm hasn’t gotten off to the start he was hoping for in the 2025 season, but much of his early struggles appear to be more about bad luck than poor performance.

is no easy task, as fans of teams like the Eagles, Sixers, Flyers, and Phillies demand excellence and hold their athletes to high standards.

Since making his debut in 2020, Phillies All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm has experienced plenty of ups and downs. From criticism over his defense to a viral moment where he openly expressed frustration with the city and some emotional outbursts, Bohm has been forced to mature quickly in a high-pressure environment.

He finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2020, but it was 2023 when he truly started to shine. That season, he posted a .274 average with 31 doubles, 20 home runs, and 97 RBIs, striking out just 94 times. In 2024, Bohm earned his first All-Star nod and put together another strong campaign: a .280 batting average, 44 doubles (tied for third most in MLB), 15 home runs, 97 RBIs, and only 86 strikeouts over 143 games.

So far, though, the 28-year-old hasn’t found his rhythm in the early stages of 2025.

Heading into Friday’s game, Alec Bohm was struggling at the plate, posting a slash line of .173/.184/.227 with a .411 OPS. Over his first 18 games of the season, he had just three extra-base hits, five RBIs, one walk, and 16 strikeouts. Typically a fixture in the heart of the Phillies’ lineup, Bohm had recently been moved down as far as eighth in the batting order during the 2025 season.

Reflecting on his early-season struggles, Bohm told MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki: “It’s probably about trying to care a little less about the results — even if I still think, ‘yeah, that sucked.’ At some point — whether it’s tomorrow, a week, or a month from now — I’ll be a different player. I’ve worked, I’ve prepared, I’ve done everything I can. I just have to trust that.”

Despite his slow start, there are signs that Bohm is on the verge of turning things around. According to Statcast data entering Friday’s series opener against the Marlins, his slugging percentage lagged 168 points behind his expected slugging, his expected batting average was 73 points higher than his current average, and his expected wOBA was nearly 100 points above his actual number.

He’s making solid contact, averaging 91.0 mph in exit velocity with a hard-hit rate of 49.2% — both above league average. The numbers suggest that while the results haven’t been there yet, Bohm may be due for a rebound. Baseball can be unforgiving, and Bohm — an All-Star third baseman — is being reminded of that firsthand.
