BREAKING: Proposed Lions signing replaces Carlton Davis with Amon-Ra St. Brown’s nemesis.THANHDUNG

One of the top priorities for the Detroit Lions this offseason will be their decision on veteran starting cornerback Carlton Davis, who is set to hit free agency this offseason.

Davis was sensational for the Lions in 2024 after being acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, he also faced a familiar issue: Davis dealt with an injury that forced him to miss time and ended his season early.

The Lions likely have interest in bringing Davis back, but how hard they go after him will probably be reliant on what they plan on doing with Ennis Rakestraw Jr., who could be a starter in 2025.

Even if Rakestraw Jr. is slated to start in a cornerbacks room that also includes Amik Robertson and Terrion Arnold, the Lions would be wise to bring in a veteran insurance policy considering the jury is still out on the Missouri product.

In an article suggesting one free-agent move for every team, The 33rd Team’s Marcus Mosher pegs Dallas Cowboys pending free-agent cornerback Jourdan Lewis to the Lions.

“The former Michigan star was a force for the Cowboys this season and arguably had the best season of his career. He is a no-nonsense cornerback that does his best work in the slot,” Mosher wrote. “Lewis is getting older, and slot defenders usually don’t age that well. However, he is exactly the type of player that Dan Campbell loves and would be an awesome fit for the Detroit Lions.”

Lions fans may remember Lewis from his beef with wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who said the Cowboys pending free agent said “crazy” things when trash talking.

“He was talking crazy out of pocket,” St. Brown said The Pivot podcast. “Even [Lions wideout Jameson Williams] heard it, too. He was coming in. At that point, it’s like, I don’t know what he’s saying. I’m trying to make plays, win the game. I’m not worried about him. But once he starts talking like that, it’s like, all right, if I do get a chance to kill him, (I’m going to) kill him.”

A Michigan native, Lewis went on to respond, saying he is “passionate about my craft and I don’t want to be friends with everyone, especially a Detroit Lion not from Detroit.”

Lewis also called St. Brown a “b****” in a direct message that St. Brown made public. Clearly, there is no love lost between these two and a lot would have to be cleared up before the Lions could even think about bringing Lewis in.

Putting all that aside for a moment, Lewis would be a good fit with the Lions. As Mosher notes, he plays in the slot, which would give Detroit an insurance policy for whoever starts there in 2025, whether that be Robertson or Rakestraw.

Mosher projects Lewis to receive a one-year, $8 million deal. While the Lions can afford that with $46.5 in 2025 cap space, that seems a bit rich for someone who would likely be a No. 4.

However, paying Lewis that much on a one-year deal would make it a bit easier to swallow, as there’s no long-term commitment. Not to mention, the Lions will value depth even more this year after the plethora of injuries the team had in 2024.
