Quinn Ewers, much like Shedeur Sanders, experienced a significant drop in the Draft, ultimately being selected in the final round with pick number 231 by the Miami Dolphins. In Miami, he will compete with Zach Wilson for the backup quarterback position, as Tua Tagovailoa remains the undisputed starter despite his numerous injuries.
Ewers opted to skip his final year of eligibility with the Texas Longhorns to enter the NFL Draft, though things didn’t unfold as expected. Initially, league scouts had anticipated the quarterback would be a third- or fourth-round pick, but he nearly went undrafted. During the pre-draft evaluation, Ewers attended the “Dallas Day” event with the Dallas Cowboys.
There were strong rumors that the Cowboys were interested in the Texas Longhorns quarterback as they searched for a backup. However, a few weeks before the Draft, the Cowboys traded with the New England Patriots to acquire Joe Milton III as their backup, closing the door on Ewers.
Ultimately, Ewers dropped to the seventh round, being the last quarterback chosen, despite leading the Longhorns to two consecutive College Football Playoff semifinals. One of Ewers’ greatest attributes is his mindset, which contributed positively during his tenure with the Longhorns, especially handling the pressure of having Arch Manning as his backup.
For now, Quinn is eager to compete. “Being the last [quarterback] selected definitely adds a lot of motivation,” Ewers stated. The Dolphins present a significant opportunity for Ewers. His direct competitor, Zach Wilson, has yet to make a strong impression in the NFL, and the starter, Tua Tagovailoa, frequently deals with injuries. Thus, the former Longhorns quarterback will eventually have his chance.
