BREAKING: Rafael Devers Gets Praise From Red Sox CEO Amid Third Base Controvers, Alex Cora Speaks Out ‘We Wouldn’t Win If… nhathung

Speculation about Rafael Devers’ tenure with the Boston Red Sox erupted when the team acquired Alex Bregman in free agency last month. Bregman expressed flexibility, willing to play wherever needed, and it was evident that the team required his Gold Glove-caliber skills at third base.

Devers, who has been a fixture at third for Boston since 2018, was not thrilled when the team suggested he transition to designated hitter to accommodate Bregman. “No,” Devers stated repeatedly in February, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. “I play third.” As Opening Day looms just two days away, Devers finds himself not at third base.

Over recent weeks, Devers has publicly adopted a more accommodating stance regarding the Red Sox’s strategy to utilize him as a DH in 2025. Maybe he’s mellowed after the initial surprise, or perhaps management advised him to set aside personal pride.

Boston Red Sox Third Baseman Rafael Devers Changes Tone on Potential Move to DH

Red Sox CEO praises Rafael Devers amid third base dilemma. Team president Sam Kennedy lauded Devers for prioritizing team success over personal preference. “He’s put winning and the team above all else,” Kennedy stated on MassLive’s “Fenway Rundown” podcast.

“It doesn’t mean he agrees with every decision or isn’t highly competitive. As I mentioned in Florida, he’s the only player from our 2018 championship still with us. He’s driven to win titles, and he’s a player of championship stature.” Kennedy’s remarks could be an effort to mend fences after Devers reportedly considered requesting a trade following the Bregman signing.

Leaders often communicate with players through the media, and this might be Kennedy’s way of affirming Devers’ value to the team. It could also be a subtle reminder to Devers to prioritize the team’s success over personal sentiments. “We expect he’ll continue this approach,” Kennedy said. “We’re grateful for his commitment. Most importantly, Raffy desires what we all do — to win baseball games.”
