BREAKING: Steelers urged to sign $21 million cornerback to bolster defense.THANHDUNG

The Pittsburgh Steelers have hit a rough patch in the 2024 campaign, as the team has lost three consecutive games and is no longer in first place in the AFC North. The Steelers will host the Cincinnati Bengals at Acrisure Stadium in Week 18 after falling to the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas Day in Week 17.

The Steelers’ defense is usually the engine of the team, but Teryl Austin’s unit has struggled over the last few weeks, especially the secondary. Pittsburgh’s cornerback room is one of the weaker position groups on the roster. Joey Porter Jr. has shown some promise as CB1, but Donte Jackson has been extremely inconsistent and there aren’t many other standouts at the position.

General manager Omar Khan should look to upgrade the cornerback position this offseason, and Steelers Wire’s Curt Popejoy believes Pittsburgh should target Buffalo Bills’ veteran Rasul Douglas.

“The Steelers might end up cleaning house at cornerback which means a starter-ready veteran is a top priority and Douglas is a great option in that second tier of free agent cornerbacks.”

Douglas has started 13 games for the Bills in 2024 but has missed the team’s last two contests with a knee injury. The former West Virginia will return to the lineup in Week 17.

Though Douglas has posted five passes defended and 18 defensive stops this season, the 29-year-old has allowed a 75% completion rate on 48 targets and a 124.1 passer rating when targeted. The 2017 third-round pick has also surrendered three touchdowns and committed eight penalties.

If the Steelers want to acquire a savvy veteran to bolster the backend, Douglas would be a nice signing from Omar Khan, but the Super Bowl LII champion isn’t a high-level starting corner. There will be better options on the open market and in the draft for Pittsburgh.
