Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has had a top-five season at his position no matter how you slice it.

Somehow, though, that wasn’t enough for him to make the Pro Bowl.

The NFL released its initial rosters for its Feb. 2 All-Star competition, and Mayfield is notably absent. The three NFC quarterbacks who made it above him were Jayden Daniels, Sam Darnold and Jared Goff.

All three of them have had vastly impressive seasons, and deserve to be there in their own right. But Mayfield has thrown for more touchdowns (39) than all of them and more yards (4,279) than Daniels and Darnold. He also has a better passer rating (107.6) than all besides Goff.

There’s still a chance Mayfield can perform in the contest, as he was named the first alternate should any of the three selections be unable to play. That was the case for him last year, when Mayfield played in the Pro Bowl despite not being selected on the initial roster.

Of course, Mayfield’s snub may not necessarily be a bad thing, either. He’s notorious for raising his game when he has a chip on his shoulder, and will undoubtedly use this development as extra motivation in the games that matter more. The Buccaneers will clinch an NFC playoff berth with a win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Tampa did have a pair of stars selected to the Pro Bowl in DT Vita Vea and OT Tristan Wirfs. Mayfield is joined by WR Mike Evans, LB Lavonte David and kicker Chase McLaughlin as additional alternates.
