(WLUK) — On Tuesday, a documentary exploring both the on-field exploits and off-field controversies of legendary Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre premiered. In collaboration with Front Office Sports, Netflix launched “The Fall of Favre,” a one-hour feature that delves into the complexities of Favre’s legacy.
This is a part of Netflix’s “Untold” series focused on sports documentaries. According to Netflix’s description, “This documentary offers an illuminating look into Brett Favre’s contentious career, the shadowy side of sports fame, and the scandals that tarnished his reputation.” The film explores numerous controversial subjects throughout its runtime.
Jenn Sterger, the central figure in Favre’s sexting scandal, gives an interview in the documentary, asserting, “Brett Favre ultimately ruined my life.” In 2008, she accused the quarterback of harassment, which reportedly included Favre sending her inappropriate photos of himself. At that time, Sterger was a game-day host for the Jets while Favre was part of the New York team. Although the NFL concluded that Favre did not breach workplace conduct policies, Favre did acknowledge leaving Sterger voicemails. In the preview, Sterger plays one such message where Favre asks if he could “come over tonight.”
Previously, Front Office Sports described Favre as “the womanizing, hard-partying QB whose secrets were fiercely protected in provincial Green Bay.” The documentary highlights his lifestyle, showcasing instances of excessive drinking and partying. Favre is also known to have battled addictions to alcohol and painkillers. Furthermore, the film examines the Mississippi welfare scandal.
Favre was allegedly implicated in a fraudulent scheme that misappropriated $77 million intended to aid needy families. Instead, these funds were reportedly used for projects such as building a volleyball facility at the University of Southern Mississippi, Favre’s alma mater. In the documentary’s trailer, an interviewee comments, “You take money intended for the poorest. I don’t know how he sleeps at night.”
While speaking at a congressional committee meeting last September about this misuse of funds, Favre disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
