The Green Bay Packers have officially parted ways with defensive lineman Leonard Payne, General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced on Monday.
Payne, who signed with the Packers earlier this offseason, had been working to earn a spot on the team’s defensive line rotation. Despite showing flashes of potential during offseason workouts and training sessions, the Packers ultimately decided to move in a different direction as they continue to shape their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
Originally undrafted out of Fresno State, Payne had impressed scouts with his strength and tenacity at the line of scrimmage. However, facing intense competition for limited spots on the depth chart, Payne found himself on the outside looking in as roster adjustments were made.
The Packers thanked Payne for his contributions and wished him the best in his future endeavors. Meanwhile, the team continues to explore additional options to bolster their defensive front, as they prepare for the demanding NFC North schedule.
No immediate corresponding roster move was announced, but more changes could follow as the team continues to evaluate talent during offseason programs.
