Dave Naylor of TSN in Canada has announced that the Green Bay Packers are set to sign USports quarterback Taylor Elgersma following a successful evaluation during their rookie minicamp last week. Elgersma was initially expected to participate in the Buffalo Bills’ rookie minicamp as a tryout player starting Friday, but this decision ensures he won’t end up joining the Bills.
The Packers have been eyeing Elgersma for some time, having invited him for one of their 30 pre-draft visits this offseason. Notably, Elgersma was the sole quarterback brought to Green Bay and was among only four undrafted prospects who visited the team. From a talent standpoint, Elgersma was rated as the second-best player available in the Canadian Football League’s 2025 draft, trailing only Stanford receiver Elic Ayomanor, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Elgersma was eventually picked by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the second round of the CFL draft, possibly sliding down due to his NFL aspirations. For context, Ayomanor went undrafted in the eight-round NFL draft, and Kurtis Rourke, chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round, was selected one round after Elgersma in the CFL draft.
During his time at Wilfrid Laurier, Elgersma earned the Hec Crighton Trophy, Canada’s version of the Heisman Trophy. Dusty Evely from APC recently published a detailed scouting report on Elgersma, who became just the second USports player to receive a Senior Bowl invitation. Despite his impressive arm strength, it’s unlikely that Elgersma will challenge Malik Willis for the backup role to Jordan Love in 2025.
Instead, Elgersma is expected to compete with former fifth-round pick Sean Clifford for a spot on the team’s practice squad this fall. Earlier this week, the Packers freed up a roster spot by releasing receiver Tulu Griffin, so they don’t need to make any additional moves to add Elgersma to their 91-man roster.
