BALTIMORE — In his first game at home for Baltimore, Tyler O’Neill dazzled with four hits, leading the Orioles to an 8-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday.
The Orioles showcased their offensive prowess with a quartet of runs in both the first and eighth innings during their home opener, while their bullpen delivered 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Matt Bowman, Seranthony Domínguez (1-0), Keegan Akin, and Yennier Cano kept Boston at bay before Félix Bautista, returning from last year’s absence due to Tommy John surgery, entered to a roaring crowd in the ninth inning.
Bautista conceded two runs and faced Alex Bregman with two men on base as the potential tying run, but Bregman’s pop-up ended the game. Baltimore’s starter, Cade Povich, gave up three runs across 4 1/3 innings but managed eight strikeouts. Sean Newcomb (0-1) settled in after a rocky start for Boston, pitching three scoreless innings following a four-run first.
The Orioles opened their half of the first with four consecutive singles, including RBI hits by O’Neill and Ryan Mountcastle, while Cedric Mullins capped the scoring with a two-out, two-run double for a 4-0 lead. O’Neill, who joined Baltimore in the offseason, collected three singles and a double.
Jarren Duran’s two-run triple in the second and another run in the third kept Boston in contention, but Baltimore extended their advantage in the eighth with Heston Kjerstad’s RBI single, Mullins’ two-run hit with the bases loaded, and Jackson Holliday’s run-scoring single.
