The Packers are interested in retaining Quay Walker, but not through the fifth-year option, which they declined for 2026 due to the hefty $14.751 million guarantee attached to it. Walker remains signed with Green Bay for the 2025 season, concluding his rookie contract, and is set to earn $2.592 million.
ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported this news following the Packers’ decision to exercise the option on their other 2022 first-round selection, Devonte Wyatt, a defensive tackle. General manager Brian Gutekunst explained at the NFL Combine, as reported by The Athletic, that the cost for linebackers’ fifth-year options is inflated due to the inclusion of many edge players, making it less appealing.
Gutekunst expressed a desire to keep Walker long-term, potentially through an extension. In his third NFL season, Walker recorded 14 pressures and 31 defensive stops, allowing a 96.6 passer rating when targeted, a significant improvement from the 109.8 rating he permitted in 2023. Despite not opting for the extension, it’s evident the Packers aim to retain Walker.
Gutekunst stated before the draft that they intend to keep such players beyond 2026, either through an extension or another method. Although Walker hasn’t fully met the expectations set when he was drafted in the first round three years ago, the Packers remain optimistic about his development and potential.
Gutekunst acknowledged Walker’s significant progress and leadership qualities, noting his impact despite injury setbacks and expressing a strong desire to have him remain with the team beyond his current contract.
