The Detroit Tigers defeated the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday afternoon, improving their AL-best record to 37-20. Right-handed starting pitcher Jackson Jobe received the nod for Detroit in this contest, and he continued what has been a challenging rookie season.

Going just 4.2 innings, Jobe surrendered seven hits and three earned runs while walking three batters and striking out four. The outing raised his season ERA to 4.22 in 49 innings pitched. His 1.49 WHIP is also high, but despite the poor individual numbers, the 22-year-old owns a 4-1 record.

Jobe’s day ended after 95 pitches (58 strikes) against San Francisco.

It is standard for starting pitchers to speak with the media after each outing, but following Wednesday’s contest, Detroit made the unexpected move to not have Jobe address reporters. Additionally, the team closed clubhouse access to reporters within an hour of the game’s completion.

“Jackson Jobe didn’t talk to reporters,” Evan Petzold of Detroit Free Press reported on X. “He wasn’t seen in the clubhouse. His fastball velocity was down 1.5 mph. Also: The #Tigers closed clubhouse access within an hour of the game ending while reporters were waiting for Jobe — violating MLB club and media regulations.”

While Jobe did not have a good outing, this decision is especially strange because Detroit still won the game. Sitting atop the American League Central, the Tigers have a six game lead over the Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins who sit in a tie for second place.

Jobe has made just 12 appearances (10 starts) at the MLB level.
