MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Zach Wilson found many appealing aspects in joining the Miami Dolphins. “What’s not to admire?” he remarked on Monday. “Their offense is incredibly dynamic. It all originates from coach Mike McDaniel and trickles down. Tua Tagovailoa’s growth since he joined has been evident.

I’m thrilled to be part of this team.” Wilson, who inked a one-year contract to serve as the backup quarterback to Tagovailoa, sought a chance to demonstrate his progress since being benched by the New York Jets in 2023, with hopes of reclaiming a starting role.

The Jets’ No. 2 overall pick in 2021, Wilson spent last season as a backup in Denver without taking a single snap. During that period, he focused on enhancing his decision-making and pocket awareness, now progressing through his reads more fluidly.

Wilson was the Jets’ starter for much of his three-year stint in New York, but he fell short of the high expectations as a top draft pick meant to steer the franchise. His tenure with the Jets showcased his strong arm and agility but was marred by poor choices.

His record as a starter was 12-21, with 6,293 passing yards, 498 rushing yards, a 57% completion rate, and 23 touchdowns, offset by 25 interceptions. The uncertainty of free agency proved difficult, but ultimately, Wilson believed the Dolphins would give him the support and chance to prove his capability as an NFL starter.

Wilson cited Tagovailoa’s evolution under McDaniel as another source of motivation. Tagovailoa thrived as a starter after McDaniel’s hiring before the 2022 season, throwing over 3,500 yards twice, including a league-leading 4,624 yards in 2023. “Seeing how belief and a supportive staff can elevate a player, and witnessing his high-level play, is invaluable,” Wilson noted. “It’s beneficial to be around that and learn from it.”

Wilson acknowledged that establishing himself as a starter requires daily practice efforts and greater consistency moving forward. Initially seen as the future face of the franchise when the Jets drafted him from BYU, Wilson was known for his athleticism and ability to make throws on the run.

However, he struggled during his initial seasons in New York. The Jets opted to move on when they acquired Aaron Rodgers for the 2023 season, but when Rodgers was injured in the opener, Wilson resumed the starting role. Unfortunately, he struggled with consistency and showed minimal improvement, leading to his benching.

Despite a rocky start to his career, Wilson aims to rise above the label of journeyman. He remains confident in his potential with the right opportunity. “I still believe I can be a starter in this league when the chance arises,” Wilson said. “So, I strive to position myself with the best team and coaches, doing my utmost to succeed.”
