The San Francisco 49ers did not have a season to remember as they could not stick to their goal of returning to the Super Bowl. In fact, they could not even reach the playoffs in a season when quarterback Brock Purdy was expected to show the football world his worth ahead of contract negotiations.

The 49ers did not start well without reigning Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey. Some pointed out that those struggles showed their dependence on the running back. By the time he came back, the team was just a .500 squad that struggled to get their offense going.

Their struggles proved to be too much for McCaffrey, as they lost three straight games, finishing with the Buffalo Bills loss that ended the running back’s season. Another aspect that some pointed out was that the absence of Brandon Aiyuk, which also impacted the offense.

To many, it seemed as if the lack of weapons showed that Brock Purdy is not elite enough to impact the team. Former NFL star Chris Simms continued with this theme while on Pro Football Talk along with host Mike Florio.

The former quarterback cited Baker Mayfield‘s contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He feels the San Francisco 49ers should not pay him more than Mayfield, as Purdy has not shown he is better than Mayfield. Therefore, Simms echoes what some say that Purdy is not worth 50-60 million dollars.

GM John Lynch wants Brock Purdy to be a 49er for a long, long time

The contract negotiations for Brock Purdy are scheduled to happen this off season. The team does not want to delay it and will probably hammer it out in the weeks to come. When reporters at the 49ers’ media facilities asked GM John Lynch about the negotiations, he gave a indication of that.

The GM added that the past two days have been hectic as he and head coach Kyle Shanahan have been conducting exit interviews. Next, they will start planning for next season and will focus on what they have to do.
Along with that, their priority is to sit down with Brock Purdy and his agent to finalize the deal. Lynch accepted that this season did not go to plan, but did not throw his starting QB under the bus. Therefore, it is likely that news will soon come out about the new contract
