Brock Purdy’s 2024 season may be done, but it appears as if the San Francisco 49ers quarterback avoided a serious injury.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update on Purdy following the Niners’ 40-34 loss to the Detroit Lions in their final home game of the year.
Purdy left the game in the final two minutes after suffering an injury on a sack by Brian Branch.
He was seen clearly grimacing while attempting to throw on the sideline, prompting concern Purdy may have suffered an injury akin to the torn elbow ligaments he sustained in the NFC Championship Game at the end of the 2022 season.
Speaking in his postgame press conference, Shanahan said Purdy is dealing with “nerve stuff” in his elbow and will undergo an MRI on Tuesday.
“I know everyone when they hear Brock’s elbow and stuff just like me you think of the elbow injury from a couple years ago,” said Shanahan.
“Just talking to a couple of doctors he just got hit in the right spot and when you get hit there your nerves go and you can’t feel much. Hopefully it’ll be alright.”
Shortly after, Purdy described the sensation in his arm in the immediate aftermath of the injury.
“My arm was on fire,” Purdy said. “I tried throwing a couple on the sideline and couldn’t.
“In the moment it just felt heavy. Tomorrow we’ll have an answer.”
Like Shanahan, Purdy allayed concerns about the injury being similar to the one he suffered in Philadelphia in January 2023, which led to a lengthy recovery process ahead of the 2023 campaign.
“We did some tests with UCL stuff and I’m good in that regard,” he added. “But we’ve just got to go get imaging on it and see the whole thing.”
That imaging will determine whether Purdy has a realistic possibility of playing in the regular-season finale against the Arizona Cardinals. While it appears unlikely it will reveal a serious injury for Purdy, the MRI and its outcome could have a big say in how handsomely he is paid as he seeks a contract extension this offseason.
