I know what you’re thinking: awards for the Dallas Cowboys in 2024? Really? With all the ups and downs this season, it’s understandable that a lot of fans are ready to move on to next year. However, in the midst of the frustration, there have certainly been bright spots that deserve recognition. While the season didn’t unfold exactly as the Cowboys had hoped, there are players who shone and made their mark. Instead of dwelling on what didn’t go right, let’s take a moment to highlight some of the team’s standout performers and their achievements.
MVP: Micah Parsons
Even though Micah Parsons missed four games this season, he’s remained a dominant force on the field. Currently sitting sixth in both pressures and pass rush win rate, Parsons has consistently made an impact when on the field. His return from injury midseason was a game-changer for the Cowboys’ defense. Under the leadership of Mike Zimmer, the defense took a noticeable turn for the better, and much of that can be credited to Parsons’ relentless pursuit and disruptive play. His ability to change the game, even with some time missed, solidifies him as the team’s MVP.
Dawg of the Year: CeeDee Lamb
CeeDee Lamb has been a true warrior this season, and his ability to keep showing up week after week despite a banged-up shoulder is nothing short of impressive. He’s been the Cowboys’ most consistent and reliable receiver, ranking third in the NFL for receptions (101) and receiving yards (1,194) prior to Week 16. This was despite the team having to rely on backup quarterback Cooper Rush for several games. Lamb has silenced all doubts about his attitude and commitment, proving time and time again that he’s a player you can count on in crunch time.
Most Fun Player of the Year: DeMarvion Overshown
Although it’s painful to give this award due to his unfortunate season-ending injury, DeMarvion Overshown deserves all the recognition for his stellar play in 2024. In his first year on the field for the Cowboys, Overshown proved he belongs in the NFL. He was playing at an All-Pro level, making plays everywhere—defending the run, covering passes, and even rushing quarterbacks when the opportunity arose. His future in the league looks incredibly bright, and if he makes a full recovery, he has the potential to become one of the top players at his position. The Cowboys’ defense will only get better with him in the mix.
Breakout Player of the Year: Rico Dowdle
Rico Dowdle has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the season. Don’t underestimate just how impressive his performance has been in 2024. With limited opportunities, Dowdle has still managed to finish the season with a solid success rate and has shown flashes of brilliance when given the ball. Had he received more touches, he could have found himself much closer to the league leaders in rushing yards. Dowdle displayed RB1 potential, combining excellent vision and patience with the ability to hit holes aggressively and pick up yards after contact. His future looks very promising.
Play of the Year: KaVontae Turpin
I don’t even need to go into the details of this one—you already know it’s the 99-yard kickoff return touchdown by KaVontae Turpin. He broke ankles with one of the most dazzling spin moves of the year and reached speeds of 21.35 miles per hour against the Washington Commanders. This play was nothing short of electrifying and is a contender for play of the year at the NFL Honors. It was a jaw-dropping moment that will be remembered for a long time.
Surprise of the Year: Brock Hoffman
Brock Hoffman’s emergence on the Cowboys’ offensive line has been a pleasant surprise. When he stepped in for the injured Zack Martin, the Cowboys’ O-line started to show signs of improvement. While Martin was dealing with injuries, Hoffman brought a unique edge, particularly in the run-blocking game. Although he’ll face competition for the starting role next season, he’s established himself as a legitimate contender for the right guard position. After battling for the center position, Hoffman’s performance on the line has earned him a place as a key piece for the future.
Rookie of the Year: Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe’s first season with the Cowboys has been nothing short of impressive. Whether it was as a run blocker or in pass protection, Beebe has shown that he’s more than ready for the NFL. Despite being thrust into the center position after never playing it at the college level, he’s performed at a high level and is only going to improve with more experience. Beebe’s steady play in his rookie year has given the Cowboys a bright future on the offensive line.
As the 2024 season wraps up, it’s important to take a step back and appreciate the individual efforts that helped keep the team competitive, even in the face of adversity. While the Cowboys may not have reached their ultimate goal this year, these players have proven they are key pieces of the future, and they deserve recognition for their hard work and dedication.
