Danielle Collins doesn’t hold herself back from expressing her opinions. And upon seeing a photo of her at the United Cup go viral, she chose to make it as her profile picture on Instagram.

On Sunday (January 5), ahead of the United Cup final, when the players from both Team USA and Team Poland lined up for the customary handshake, Collins’ facial expressions while shaking hands with Iga Swiatek sparked controversy.

In the clip that’s been doing rounds on social media, Collins, following the handshake, quickly turned her head and walked on. Many fans slammed her for her behavior but Collins paid no heed to her critics as she simply took to Instagram to laugh at her expressions.

Apart from changing her profile picture to that of the photo of her expressions during the handshake, the American also shared two Instagram stories about the same picture.

In the next story, she wrote, ‘Sometimes I just gotta laugh at myself’. Fans on social media thought the controversy at the 2024 Paris Olympics prompted Collins to react in that way.

Check out the two Instagram stories here:

Collins is at the receiving end of criticism from Swiatek’s supporters since their meeting at the Paris Olympics. In the quarterfinals, Swiatek faced Collins but the latter withdrew from the match due to illness.

During the handshake, Collins left Swiatek perplexed and at the press conference, when asked about their heated exchange, Collins accused Swiatek of being ‘insincere’ about her illness.

Iga Swiatek locked horns with Coco Gauff in the first match of the United Cup final. After Gauff clinched the first set 6-4 and took a 5-4 lead in the second set, Swiatek took a medical timeout, but the short break didn’t help her much as she soon lost the match 6-4, 6-4. The 23-year-old has now revealed the real reason behind the medical timeout.

After Swiatek’s defeat, compatriot Hubert Hurkacz also lost his match to Taylor Fritz, and Team USA won the tournament for the second time. USA lifted the United Cup in the inaugural edition in 2023.
