Could Davante Adams Return to the Green Bay Packers?
A Cryptic Hint Sparks Speculation
Wide receiver Davante Adams is still under contract with the New York Jets, but recent hints suggest he may be open to reuniting with the Green Bay Packers. Just weeks after expressing interest in a potential return, Adams posted an Instagram story featuring green and gold speakers—colors synonymous with his former team.
While this could be purely coincidental, Packers fans on social media wasted no time speculating about the possibility of the star receiver making his way back to Green Bay in 2025.
Contract Situation and Potential Move
Adams is currently signed with the Jets for two more seasons, with a hefty salary of $36.25 million per year. However, there are no guaranteed payments left on his deal, and 2025 has long been viewed as a critical juncture in his contract, originally signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022.
The Jets have the option to restructure his deal to keep him in New York, but that would require Adams’ cooperation. If he chooses not to remain with the team, the Jets would need to pay his full contract to retain him.
A mutual parting could lead to two possible scenarios: New York releasing Adams or trading him before the season begins. If a trade occurs, he could negotiate a new deal with the acquiring team. Alternatively, if released, he would have the freedom to sign as a street free agent, potentially opening the door for a Packers reunion.
How Adams Would Fit in Green Bay
At 32 years old, Adams may no longer be the dominant WR1 he once was during his first stint in Green Bay. However, that may not be a major concern for the Packers.
“I know the term ‘number one receiver’ gets thrown out a lot, but I think it depends on what that means to you,” said Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst after the season. “I’d like our football team to get to a point where we can win in situational football better than we have right now. For us to do that, that group is going to have to take some steps, and I think they will. They’re on the right track.”
With a young receiving corps already in place, the Packers may not need Adams to be their primary option. Instead, his experience, leadership, and proven ability in critical situations could make him a valuable addition to the team.
A Legacy Worth Revisiting
Adams spent the first eight seasons of his NFL career (2014-2021) with the Packers, establishing himself as one of the league’s premier receivers. In 2022, he was traded to the Raiders after Green Bay placed the franchise tag on him. By 2024, he found himself on the move again, this time joining the Jets for a third-round pick.
Despite his age, Adams remains an elite playmaker. In just 11 games with Aaron Rodgers in 2024, he recorded 67 receptions for 854 yards and seven touchdowns. His résumé speaks for itself—three-time First-Team All-Pro, six-time Pro Bowler, and two-time NFL leader in receiving touchdowns.
Will the Reunion Happen?
At this stage, nothing is certain. Adams’ Instagram post could be a simple coincidence or a subtle nod to something bigger. If the Packers are interested and the Jets decide to part ways, a reunion could become a real possibility.
